Favorite picture books

PBS Parents has launched a new blog that focuses on “spreading the fun and love of children’s books,” Booklights. The blog’s contributors (Susan, Pam and Jen) have started off by listing their 10 favorite picture books. I loved reading their lists, so I was inspired to try and do the same. Easier said than done! After thinking about it, I discovered that my favorites tend to either be books that I loved reading aloud to students as an elementary librarian (many years ago!) or ones that I have fond memories of sharing with my niece and nephew, who are now 15 and 16.

Here is my list (in no particular order):

1. George and Martha by James Marshall

2. King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub by Don and Audrey Wood

3. Horton Hatches the Egg by Dr. Seuss

4. Verdi by Janelle Cannon

5. Humbug Witch by Lorna Balian

6. Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes

7. Rumplestiltskin by Paul O. Zelinsky

8. Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathman

9. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

10. Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing by Judi and Ron Barrett

I found that my favorites change so often! I guess my all time favorite (right now) is Chester by Melanie Watt.

My favorite Dr. Seuss book is also Horton Hatches the Egg which is often overlooked by kids. I read it every year to my Kindergarten and PreK classes.

My favorite Holiday book is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer by Robert L. May Illustrated by David Wenzel.

The story brings me to tears each year I read it to the kids and the illustrations are amazing! The art work is so beautiful I wish I had a framed picture of Rudolph tucked in his bed for my home during the Holidays.

    Thanks for sharing.

My favorite newer book is That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown by Cressida Cowell. It’s a very clever look into a child’s relationship with a favorite stuffed animal.

I discovered The Zombie Nite Cafe and read it to many classes around Halloween. It’s still being requested and placed on hold! The illistrations are priceless.

To get it down to 10 would take lots of thought. I have so many favorites. Currently my new favorites are off our Mockingbird List. (Chowder, The End) From childhood I loved a series about the Small family by Lois Lenski. I love Margaret Wise Browne too (Goodnight Moon & the Runaway Bunny). My favorite changes often. my younger students often ask, “Is this book your favorite?” The reply is often It’s one you will love!

I forgot to include Tasha Tudor. I spent hours with her Fairy Tales & other books. Every Christmas my mother still displays ‘Take Joy” one of her Christmas books.

I have so many favorites, some that were on your list. However, one stand out favorite of mine is Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse. I guess it’s a girl thing.
